As a child, I gravitated towards music as a creative and emotional outlet. I was the shy and quiet student in class, finding it difficult to share my creative ideas and express myself as an individual. But I soon discovered that communicating emotion was easier when I expressed myself through music. I loved playing the piano and through learning this instrument I was taught how to interpret and express emotion through piano repertoire, which was provided by my teacher. This broadened my knowledge towards the larger world of music and encouraged me to explore the music of my southern Italian heritage. I realized that music gave me purpose in life and by becoming a music educator I hope to inspire future generations of students to explore music and to pursue their dreams.
I believe that music is a unique language that nurtures and inspires all students to discover self-expression through music making. All students deserve to have access to a music program, and in my classroom, students will develop self-expression through interpreting repertoire relevant to our music classroom. In my classroom, my students and I are a team. We all try our best no matter if we get it right or make mistakes along the way because we will all learn and grow, as we celebrate our successes through creating music together. Music can tell a story without using words and my students will be encouraged to communicate and share their initial impressions of a selected work among a community of their peers.
Through learning an instrument, students will develop self-discipline, responsibility, and teamwork through practice and accountability. Music learning, especially when a student is trying to become proficient on their instrument, is a process. Although there may be challenging moments, I will support those frustrations and impart patience, and with time students will persevere and develop patience on their own. In order to avoid the more frustrating learning moments, I will keep my students engaged by providing multi-dimensional teaching techniques, which are responsive to each grade level and will facilitate music learning. Meaning, the framework of my lesson plans will incorporate activities and assignments that combine aural, visual, and kinesthetic learning. I have studied the Dalcroze methodology with licensed specialist Dr. Stephen F. Moore and continue to discover new and exciting ways to implement improvisation and music learning through physical movements. Improvisation is a great way to encourage students to take a leadership role and to work together as a team. Students will learn leadership and teamwork skills through listening, creating their own melodic patterns, identify tempi, and internalize rhythmic patterns.
My approach to teaching has been strengthened through discovering my own voice and through my development and studies in the fields of Musicology and Music Education. As a Musicologist, I will introduce students to a healthy mixture of musical works and provide content connected to historical contributions from diverse cultures of the world. This is also important to acknowledge and demonstrate respect towards different cultural heritages and to cultivate student understanding and appreciation for their own cultures and the cultures of their peers. As a Music Educator, I will continue to inspire my students to reach their full potential and provide a safe space for all students to express themselves through the language of music.
