I believe that music is a unique language that nurtures and inspires all students to discover self-expression through music making. All students deserve to have access to a music program, and in my general elementary classroom, students will develop self-expression through exploring music and instruments that are relevant to our music classroom.
Through singing and learning an instrument, students will develop self-discipline, responsibility, and teamwork alongside their peers. Learning music is a process and although there may be challenging moments, I will support every student and impart patience, and with time students will persevere and develop patience on their own. I believe that in order to avoid the more frustrating learning moments, students need to be engaged through multi-dimensional teaching techniques, which are responsive to each elementary grade level and will facilitate music learning. Meaning, the framework of my lesson plans will incorporate activities and assignments that accommodate the aural, visual, and kinesthetic learners.
I believe that learning music can be adapted to suit the needs of all learners. This is important in order for them to access their “funds of knowledge” to articulate creative ideas and convey what they have learned in class. As a general music teacher, my goal is to foster my student’s pursuit of knowledge and to inspire active learning.
I believe that every student has the ability to succeed. I encourage students to ask questions and engage in the classroom activities. Regardless of their academic level, musical knowledge, or general ability, I aim to set attainable goals for our classroom and teach my students about the elements of music, which they can take with them to secondary school. This will be achieved by setting reasonable expectations and creating a space where students feel respected and accepted for who they are individually.
